Tragedy at George Washington Birthplace beach

A visit with relatives ended in tragedy for one out of town family after a trip to George Washington's Birthplace.

According to Westmoreland County Sheriff, C. O. Balderson a call came in on Sunday, Aug. 11 at 7:12 p.m. to respond to a possible drowning of a three-year-old boy in Bridges Creek near the beach at George Washington’s Birthplace in Westmoreland County.

According to a source close to the incident a mother was holding a baby and her three-year-old child when she hit a drop off unexpectedly.

Park Rangers along with other park visitors searched for the boy, who had disappeared below the surface. A private citizen found him. The boy was reportedly under water for almost 15 minutes.

Balderson confirmed that the child had gone under water but did not have the exact time he was under.

Aggressive measures were taken to try and save his life before first responders from Rescue Station One transported the child to Riverside Tappahannock Hospital. Unfortunately he succumbed to his injuries by morning.

Engine Company Four also responded to the incident.

Westmoreland Sheriff's Deputy Donald Jones is investigating the incident.

No further details.
