Outdoors Report - July 4, 2012

Happy Independence Day. Thank a veteran or service member for their sacrifice and enjoy our freedom. Most importantly plan to vote this fall!

Despite the heat the fishing has been pretty good. Check river levels before going out.

Rappahannock River

Catfish are hitting nightcrawlers and cutbait up and down the river. Fish are small though.

Ken’s Tackle (898-1011) reports that there has been some decent catfish caught on cutbait and nightcrawlers near Lil Falls.

Potomac River

Aqualand (301-259-0572) is telling us that catfish are hitting anything. Some striper were caught over the weekend. A few croaker are around.

Ken’s Tackle reported they are catching croaker at Colonial Beach on bloodworms and squid. Crabs are also being caught and they are selling plenty of crabbing supplies as a result. Most crabbers are reporting catching them around Colonial Beach.

Bass are hitting large worms and jigs around Aquia Creek. Snakeheads are ever present!

Ponds/Lakes—

Mott’s Run Reservoir (540-786-8989) the phone was out. Not sure if they are open yet or not after the storm.

Ponds are producing some great bass action on nightcrawlers and plastics.

Lake Anna was good for bass and crappie anglers this past week too! Go deep for them though.  Striper are deep and jigging spoons is effective. Soft plastics are good on the bass.

Saltwater

Captain Ryan Rogers (www.fishmidnightsun.com) at 804-580-0245 reported offshore action was good for tuna and dolphin. Some inshore fishing was hot for spadefish. In the bay the flounder fishing was decent in the usual spots.

Events

Motts Reservoir Night Catfishing event on July 20th and August 17th 8:30 PM –1 AM. 540-786-8989.

Outdoor Sportsman Show August 10-12th at Richmond International Raceway. http://www.sportsmanshow.com/
